Events
Here are some events we have done in the past:
- The plant sale:
We had our annual plant sale in the Campus Center. It is a way for us to spread our green obsession all over the campus as well as
make some money to keep our little operation running.
- The Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest:
The Pumpkin Carving Contest is another annual event. We provide pumpkins to every house on campus beforehand, and they carve them (hopefully before they rot!).
Then they brought the pumpkins to the President's house on Halloween to be judged. Such things as President Christ's head, a safe-sex
tribute, and a muse have been carved on the pumpkins, along with the usual witches and haunted houses. It is a great time, and there is lots of great food and apple cider! Halloween and food, what more could you want?
- The Family Weekend Campus Walk:
The campus walk takes place during Family Weekend and is intended to reveal all the incredible plant specimens the Smith Botanic Gardens have.
The photo above shows the group.
- Our biannual newsletter, the Seedling:
The Seedling comes out every fall and spring. It is a newsletter with interesting facts about all things plant and nature related.
It is usually themed, with past themes ranging from the fun (Plant Myths and Folklore) to the informative (Houseplant Care).
- Field trips:
We are always thinking about various gardens to visit in the course of the year, but time is often short because before long, winter is
arriving, and plants are dying (or going into hibernation more like). We have visited such wonderous places as Tower Hill Botanic Garden and Magic Wings Butterfly Garden, which both have interesting things to see all year 'round.
- Workshops:
In previous years, we've done workshops on repotting, general plant care, herbal tea-making, drying and using herbs, cutting workshops, in which we frolic around Lyman Plant House and take cuttings of the plants to root and bring home with us, and more. If there's an idea for a workshop, we'll usually do it, so let us know what you're interested in!
