The Smith College Dance Community, SCDC, was thought up in 2006 by Katie Green, Elana Silverman, Helene Parker, Meredith Lyons, and Maura Donohue. While on a committee to select a new visiting professor, issues these people had about Smith’s dance department were brought up and discussed. Because of the desire to address and fix these issues, this organization was created. We are striving to increase the visibility of the dance department, create more opportunities for students to take and teach dance classes, and foster a true dance community at Smith. To further these ends, we became a recognized organization in the fall of 2007 and a chartered organization in the spring of 2008.
We have come a long way from those days in the Campus Center Cafe, ranting about this or that. However our original statement of purpose is and will always be this. “The Smith College Dance Community is being formed to strengthen the dance community at Smith by encouraging camaraderie among undergraduate, graduate, and faculty dancers as well as creating a venue in which students can both learn and teach new dance skills. “
