A letter from Jacqueline Kennedy

Today, on what would have been Jacqueline Kennedy’s 82nd birthday, the International Advancement Blog is publishing the text of a letter sent to Smith in regard to the former first-lady’s experience on the Paris JYA program.  After spending her junior year in Paris, Jacqueline Kennedy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French literature at George Washington University.  Her experience with Smith’s JYA program and the French language shaped her love of art and culture, and had a great impact on Jackie.

The text of Jackie’s letter, sent in September 1961, can be viewed below.  The whole letter can also be viewed in PDF format.

The pursuit of foreign languages is the key to many doors of happiness – among them, an appreciation of art and culture, an understanding of the dynamics of history, but above all the ability to meet, know, and live in peace with peoples of other lands.

We can only look with satisfaction upon the increase of foreign language enrollments in this country as well as programs of study abroad during the academic years. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life was my Junior Year in Paris with the Smith group. I found that the knowledge of a foreign language, acquired by an serious student who is fortunate enough to study abroad, has an immeasurable and lasting influence on his life.
