Yesterday, the Smith College Museum of Art SCMA) unveiled a recent gift to its collection. The piece, “Fall Sunset of Shimanami”, was donated to the museum by the Sakuma family.
The piece is an acrylic painting on washi made into six panel screen. The artist, Kyosuka Tchinai,was born in Japan in 1948 and graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a post-graduate degree. He is said to have pioneered the unique method of applying Western acrylic paint onto tradition Japanese washi paper.
This is the SCMA’s first piece by Tchinai; the artist has exhibited widely and received many awards.
