Smith alumna Merrill Garbus ’01 is the woman behind the band tUnE-yArDs. Called “one of the big indie breakout acts of 2011“, tUnE-yArDs “went from cult to mainstream, appearing on late-night television, festival stages and countless album-of-the-year lists.”
Merrill, who is no stranger to travel, having lived in the U.S., Canada, and Nairobi, is currently on a tUnE-yArDs tour that takes her through Australia, parts of Asia, and nearly a dozen European countries.
Merrill has put her Smith theatre degree to good use, saying that when she’s on stage she uses “a lot of physical and facial gestures, theatrical gestures, that really come from studying performance.”
