Smith ranks first for long-term study abroad

According to a new report by the Institute of International Education (IIE), Smith College ranks first among baccalaureate institutions in the United States for long-term study abroad programs. Long-term study abroad programs are defined as taking place during a full calendar or academic year.

The Open Doors 2011 report, relies on data from the 2009-10 academic year, because it reports only on students who have successfully completed their study abroad programs and received credit. According to the report, 135 Smith students completed full-year study abroad programs in 2009-10.

According to the IIE, study abroad by students enrolled in U.S. higher education has more than tripled over the past two decades.  Additionally, the organization found a “notable increase” in the number of U.S. students going to study in many of the less traditional destinations. Fifteen of the top 25 destinations were outside of Western Europe and nineteen were countries where English is not a primary language.
