This weekend Smith College will award 652 baccalaureate degrees and 80 advanced degrees.  The college will also award honorary degrees to Commencement speaker Jane Lynch, Haitian novelist Edwidge Danticat, pioneering financier Muriel Siebert, atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon, and architect Brinda Somaya M.A. ’73.

Brinda received a Bachelors of Architecture from Mumbai University in India and, in 1973, earned a  Master of Architecture from Smith College.  After returning to Mumbai, Brinda opened an architecture firm—Somaya and Kalappa—with her sister.  She believes “that development and progress must proceed without straining the cultural and historic environment,” and that “the Architect’s role is that of guardian—his is the conscience of the built and un-built environment.”

Congratulations, Brinda on all of your achievements!
