Among the five recently announced 2013 recipients of the prestigious Smith College Medal is international alumna Sherry Rehman ’85. Also recognized are Gail Paster ’66, Kay Holekamp ’73, Janet McKinley ’76, and Anne De Groot ’78. The Smith College Medal was established in 1962 to recognize women who exemplify in their lives and work “the true purpose” of a liberal arts education.
Sherry is Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States. She also worked as a journalist for twenty years and has worked to defend women’s rights as both a journalist and politician.
While in parliament, Sherry authored bills for women’s rights including the Women Empowerment Bill, Anti-Honor Killings Bill, Domestic Violence Prevention Bill, Affirmative Action Bill and Hudood Repeal Bill. She is also the chair of the Lady Dufferin Foundation Trust, a non-profit provider of women and children’s subsidised healthcare.
