Created in 1983, Nosotr@s offers a support network for Latinas at Smith College by creating a safe space for students who share similar cultural backgrounds. The club also welcomes people of all backgrounds from the Smith community, attracting intelligent, enthusiastic Smithies.

Anna Jiménez ’14, co-president of Nosotr@s, explained that “Nosotr@s strives to embrace an active cultural, social, and political exchange between members and the greater Smith community about injustices facing Latinas on Smith’s campus as well as the rest of the world.”

The club currently has over 60 members and hosts a series of campus-wide events throughout the academic year. Just this semester, the group held Latin Heritage Month events, a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration, a Latin Fusion Party and more. Anna commented that the Latin Heritage Month celebrations are most important in her opinion due to celebrating “the independence of many countries and it is a time when we have the opportunity to capture the attention of the community and educate them on the diversity of our cultures.”

Anna hopes the club continues to grow in number and strength, pursuing an active role in the Smith community for the betterment of all through the education of social justice issues both at Smith and outside of Smith. As the club embraces new members under the leadership of Anna and her co-president, Edith Zavala ’15, they work toward their goal of heightening awareness of social justice issues and hardships faced by the Latino community today.

The club is particularly proud of winning the Student Leadership Award for Outstanding Student Organization in the 2011-2012 academic year.
