For those aspiring to be marine mammal biologists or researchers, having a general educational background in biology, chemistry, ecology, fish biology, zoology, and conservation courses is crucial.  Also, taking courses in statistics is important for future researchers.  Gaining experience in the lab and field and volunteering with either veterinarians, aquariums or zoos, wildlife resource centers, or wildlife rehabilitation centers may also provide important background skills.

2012 Bottlenose dolphin research assistant, Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, New Quay, Wales, UK
Job Description

Raise awareness of the local marine environment through research and education.  Also, through boat-based and land-based surveys, monitor bottlenose dolphin, harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seal populations, with a focus on the photo-identification of the semi-resident population of bottlenose dolphins in the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Education
Undergraduates and postgraduates welcome.

Prior Experience
Must have an interest in wildlife and conservation; must be positive, reliable, conscientious and mature; have the ability to work as part of a small team; must be self-motivated with an ability to work unsupervised; must be adaptable and patient; must have excellent communication skills and confidence in dealing witht he public both face to face and over the telephone; must be fluent in English; and must be willing to ask for help if unsure and admit mistakes.

Job Description
Program is looking for students to undertake research towards an M.S. degree in Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior in one of the following areas: song learning and adaptation by humpback whales; auditory distance estimation by cetaceans and songbirds; auditory scene analysis and source localization within song choruses; auditory perceptual learning in underwater echolocation; development of biomimetic sound production and reception technologies; and real-time acoustic monitoring and analysis of cetacean vocal behavior.

Education
These projects require a strong background in acoustics, pyschology, engineering or computer science.

Job Description

Spend a day or several weeks working at the facility with the animals and staff in hands-on experience.

Sperm Whales Internship, Andenes, Norway
Job Description

The project focuses on the social structure and movements of male sperm whales in North Norwegian waters.  Intern will conduct land-based surveys from Andenes lighthouse and provide extensive data management help at the office.  There will be opportunities to conduct field trips on board whale watching vessels.

Education
Must be enrolled or have a Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, environmental science or equivalent degree.  Must also speak fluent English.

Prior Experience
Have previous experience conducting basic cetacean research.
