When Should Blogs Take a Break?

I check the Daily SLog regularly as part of my job, but today I decided to check the other 4 blogs that are linked to it. These should show how upbeat, modern and part of the computer generation the libraries have become!
Eh, what? The most recent post to any of the four blogs was [...]

Google Books…the money angle

So, were you wondering how Google was going to make money on Google Books?

I was…but I naively thought it would be through advertising or book sales of out-of-print  or in-print titles.  Well I was right about the sales, but I’m just not entrepreneurial enough.  What does “Paid Full View” in the graphic below from Google’s [...]

Googles Settles with Authors Guild

Google has settled with the Author Guild to the tune of $125 million.  Settlement allows Google to continue with its scanning project of in-copyright material.  The settlement apparently also allows more than snippets of books to be seen.

Now if we can get an acceptable orphan copyright [...]

Truthiness in Wikipedia

“Wikipedia and the Meaning of Truth: Why the online encyclopedia’s epistemology should worry those who care about traditional notions of accuracy. By Simson L. Garfinkel”
From Technology Review (November/December 2008)

Sometimes I send messages I shouldn’t send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to [...]

WorldCat.org links to digitized content in Google Books

From the latest issue of OCLC Abstracts:
Thanks to new Application Programming Interfaces (API) released by Google on September 22, WorldCat.org users now have an easy, seamless way to view digitized books available in the Google Book Search collection, right on the WorldCat.org Web site. A Google Preview Button will appear in the record display when [...]

Beloit College Mindset List

The class of 2012 has grown up in an era where computers and rapid communication are the norm, and colleges no longer trumpet the fact that residence halls are “wired” and equipped with the latest hardware. These students will hardly recognize the availability of telephones in their rooms since they have seldom utilized landlines during [...]
