iPad Learning Community

The Purpose of LCs
These are study groups created by Smith faculty and topics vary. They meet for one term or two terms. All LCs are expected to create some type of reporting to the larger Smith community or an event that would benefit our campus.

The Purpose of the iPad LC
To explore the possible uses of an iPad in teaching and learning. The expectation is that members of the group will experiment in their teaching throughout the term. Each person decided what will be comfortable and what direction to pursue. They would use group meetings plus the mobile learning blog to report their findings, to share information, and to pose questions.
This first meeting is in part organizational for all of you. Please decide on a statement of purpose for your group and general goals. During spring term, you will want to decide on what your year end contribution to the campus will be. Your notes, rich with insights and real life reflections, will in itself be a wonderful legacy to pass on to your Smith colleagues.

Possible discussion questions:
How are academics using the iPad in teaching and learning? And at Smith, is there are serious application of this technology that might enhance teaching?
How might the iPad influence our relationships with our students?
How can we assess its usefulness or its impact on our teaching?
Are there recommendations from our experiences that we might make to our Smith colleagues about the uses of the iPad?

Organizational bits:
–You’ve been given an iPad loaner to use for the year. I will collect them from you within two weeks after the term ends.
–You will need an iTunes acct. Yes, feel free to use your personal iTunes account to download apps you’d like to try to your iPad loaner.
–Apple’s iPad Guide really is well organized and gives good information. It can be found on their website at apple.com.
–What to do if you need iPad help? Call x4487.
–What if you want to discuss an iPad-in-my-teaching idea or question? Email Aisha Gabriel, agabriel@smith.edu.

Apps Email Tom Laughner to request and expect an email in reply with a link for your desired app as a gift. These apps are yours to keep, of course. CET will fund up to $50 per LC member for apps.
