AMERICAN STUDENT UNION (ASU): Smith’s chapter of the American Student Union was founded in February 1935 and from its beginnings was dedicated to addressing the needs of Smith students, from the need for education in contemporary society to the need for an active progressive group linking students with the national liberal movement. The ASU applied itself to the liberal cause, organizing anti-war demonstrations, running a cooperative store, sending “material and moral aid” to Spain and China, writing letters to Congress, reaching out to local and national youth groups, and more. It flourished during the 1930’s and 1940’s.
