Three-Step FCPX Archival Process

You’ve created a polished video product in Final Cut Pro X, exported a master file, and published your production to an online sharing site. You’re finished, correct? Think again. Before setting that project aside, follow these three steps to properly archive your video production and ensure retrieval for future project updates or repurposing.

1. Assign roles (dialogue, b-roll, graphics, music, sound effects) to each of your timeline clips and export each role as a separate media stem. You can then access and edit the individual tracks for future distribution, audio mixing, or post-production.

2. Create an xml file of your projects and events. With the FCPXML file format, you can transfer your event and project metadata between Final Cut Pro X and third-party applications, devices, and media asset management tools for storage, sharing, and/or editing.

3. Create an archival library for your project by following these steps:

  • Select your project in the Event Browser.
  • Choose File > Copy Project to Library > New Library.
  • Select Optimized Media.
  • Choose File and click OK.
  • In the Libraries list, select the new library and choose File > Library Properties to adjust storage locations.
  • Choose File > Consolidate Library Files and click OK.

Note: Consolidating a library to an external location moves or copies all media referenced by the library to a single location. Render and analysis files are not copied across libraries, resulting in a smaller, more compact archive. These files can be regenerated when the new library is opened.

By following these three steps in post, you can archive your project for safe storage and ensure retrieval for future project updates.
