Problem:  the students need some means by which they can see their writing develop over the term.  How can they easily go back to earlier ideas if everything is on paper?

Goals:  to have a reliable repository for their writings that each student has control over and yet their professor can view the work, to have a flexible research instrument, to offer the students a storage location that would follow them outside of Smith.
