Make GroupWise Work for You
Are you ever frustrated that GroupWise Web is slow or that your address book is hard to use?
How do you check your GroupWise email? …most students use GroupWise Web; but there is a better way!
The GroupWise Desktop Client (available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) is faster, easier to use, more secure, and more convenient than GroupWise Web. Using the GroupWise client, you:
- only need to login once, when you startup (or wakeup) your computer;
- have access to an address book that’s easier to search and allows you to setup groups (Windows Address Book & Customization and Mac Address Book); and the
- ability to retract a message sent to another smith.edu email address;
- more powerful rules (for organizing) and filters (for searching and sorting); and
- you can save emails or attachments directly to your computer to make room in your inbox (Windows Archive and Mac Archive).
Install the GroupWise Desktop Client (for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux).
For Windows users*, switching to the GroupWise Desktop Client should be a no-brainer; the client is a powerful email tool that can also help keep you more organized.
Some special features of the Windows client include:
- an easy-to-edit calendar that is also accessible from GroupWise Web (and which also lets you send appointments to contacts in your address book);
- the ability to color-code your emails, manually or based on rules;
- the GroupWise Notifier (a small program that tells you whenever you’ve received an email or have an appointment, just like Google Notifier); and the
- GroupWise Remote Mailbox feature http://www.smith.edu/tara/groupwise/remo…) (graduating seniors or other people leaving Smith can access their saved messages and addresses even after their Smith accounts have been deleted using a Remote Mailbox).
* If you already use the GroupWise Desktop Client for Windows, please download & install the latest version (7.0.2), which includes an important security patch.
For Mac users, you have a choice to make (and also some experimenting to do). The GroupWise Desktop Client for Macs gives you all the advantages listed above, and is very easy to install.
For many Mac users, the client is great because it doesn’t require any setup – but if it doesn’t work for you, and if after trying the client, you want to try something else, you can configure Mail.app to check your GroupWise email using POP or IMAP.
