The table below contains the current timetable for updating Smith-owned Windows computers to Office 2007 and Windows Vista.
| In Progress | All new Windows computers now being distributed to faculty and staff by ITS are either Dell Optiplex 755 desktops or Dell Latitude D630 laptops. These computers come with Office 2007* pre-installed.
Faculty and staff who already have an Optiplex GX620 or higher, or a Latitude D620 or higher, may choose to upgrade to Office 2007 at any point; please contact the User Support Center at x4487 for more information. In some cases, whole departments may decide, in conjunction with ITS, to upgrade to Office 2007 at once. Note that most FCAP Dell GX270 and 280 desktop computers will be replaced with new computers over the summer, and these will come with Office 2007 pre-installed. Faculty scheduled to receive one of these replacement computers will receive additional information by email. *The Office 2007 upgrade includes Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Publisher 2007. We are not upgrading to Access 2007 at this time. In addition to the new version of Office, Microsoft has also released a new version of the Windows operating system called Windows Vista. ITS is continuing to support the Windows XP operating system, and new Windows computers are being distributed with Windows XP installed. For staff, this is because there are still many incompatibilities between Windows Vista and standard Smith software applications, including Internet Native Banner. However, faculty who do not use Internet Native Banner and would like to be part of a Vista pilot group should contact Kate Etzel, Director of User Support Services, at x4580. |
| April - Aug 2008 | ITS will offer introductory training on Office 2007 for faculty and staff who are upgrading to Office 2007, or just curious about it. |
| August 2008 | At the end of the SSW summer session, all Windows computers in campus classrooms and computer centers will be upgraded to Office 2007. |
| Summer 2009 | ITS will begin upgrading Windows XP to the Windows Vista operating system on new computers.
Note that some computers in the Wright Hall Computer Center and the Science Center may be upgraded to Windows Vista before this date. |
This page will be updated with new upgrade information as it becomes available.
