Fall Semester
Asian Tea House Performance
CISCO members formed a dance group and choreographed a piece called "Your Smile" that was performed at Asian Tea House. The performance was fantastic as expected and special thanks to the talented Jinghua Fan who have had much experience and a passion for dance. She motivated other members to look forward to participate in many more performances in the future. The challenge was the tremendous amount of time spent in preparation. In the future, we hope the dance studios on green street can be opened to all smithies who would like to find a place to dance.
Moon Festival (10/4 - Tentative)
It has become a tradition to celebrate the moon festival each year as it has always been a holiday when Chinese families and friends get together. We prepared the traditional moon cakes purchased from China town and perform a tea ceremony. Everyone gathers around to enjoy the traditional snacks and sip their authentic Chinese tea while chatting just about anything. We had a good turn out especially students from the East Asian Language department. Smithies learn about and experience how Chinese people valued this day and hear stories that got passed down through the ages. The Moon Festival will continue to be a CISCO important event of the fall.
Hot Pot Night (November)
One of the best Chinese cuisine is the Hot Pot. It is not a peculiar soup or dish but a interactive cooking and eating experience. CISCO wanted to invite Smithies to experience the delicious food and the fun of eating Hot Pot one just cannot miss out! The biggest challenge for this event was to have a good kitchen and enough supply of materials. The turn out was great but over the limit and so we became innovated and resourceful to accommodate everyone. The food had to be fresh so we needed lots of helpers just a few hours prior to the event. It was, nevertheless, great fun.
Promotion events for Chinese Play - Golden Lotus
The Play, based on one of the most famous novels in ancient China - Golden Lotus, will be staged at Smith in the fall. CISCO is glad to be involved and help with promotion of this play.
Bubble Tea Study Break (Tentative)
Everyone likes bubble tea and CISCO sponsers a bubble tea study break. The challenge was getting the bubbles because we were not experienced in knowing the right amount that would be enough. We also had to order tea powder.
Spring Semester
Lunar New Year Festival
This was the biggest event of the year and it took the entire fall semester of preparation. CISCO cosponsored this event with VSA and ASA. We had to contact professional Lion dancers, the Wesleyan University Asian Acappella group, and five college Asian student organizations to create the event. In order to make this event free for the Smith Community we had to apply for full funding. We had a great party and the DJ was fantastic. CISCO, VSA, and ASA got to work closely as one team and the process was exciting as well.
Dumpling Night
CISCO has been collaborating with the EALL department in sponsoring a dumpling party each fall. Chinese dumplings are well known, and during this event students taking EALL higer level courses would gave speeches in Chinese on topic relevant to the Chinese culture.
Karaoke night (Tentative)
If you go to Shanghai, Taipei, or any Chinese city you will soon discover the passion to go to KTVs. This year we bought two microphones so in the future CISCO will be able to hold more karaoke events.
Rhythm Nations
CISCO had planned to be on this performance since the end of Fall semester, and one of our members brought the traditional fans from Beijing over winter break. Again, Jinghua Fan choreographed this piece.
Senior Banquet
Organized by the board this year and the newly elected board for coming academic year. Seniors are excluded from the planning of a surprise party of games and a special theme.
