This link lists Secretary of States' offices for every state--register to vote in your state!

Where do you want to register? Click on your state to scroll down to voter registration information.

Massachusetts Maryland New Mexico New York

Massachusetts

To obtain a voter registration form, either fill out a Voter Registration Form Request and the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office will mail you one, or just walk yourself to Northampton's City Hall, just down the hill from Smith at 210 Main Street (map it!) and pick one up.

When you have completed your form, you can mail it to your city or town election office (list of addresses) or bring it to Northampton City Hall.

  • If you are registering in your hometown in Massachusetts, you will need to request an absentee ballot sent to you Smith mailbox unless you plan to go to the polls in your hometown on election day.
  • If you are registering at your Smith College campus address, list your house as your residence and your box number as your mailing address. For example, Suzie Queue who lives in Washburn House and has box #1111 would write "Washburn House, Smith College" as her residence address and "Box #1111, 1 Chapin Way, Northampton, MA 01063" as her mailing address.

Maryland

Visit the website of the State Board of Elections' website to print an application, or contact your local or state board of elections. Mail it to your county elections board--the addresses are listed at the end of the downloadable application PDF.

Applications to receive an absentee ballot for the 2008 presidential elections are already available. Download an application from the State Board of Elections and either fax or mail it to your county elections board by February 5 to vote in the primaries.

New Mexico

There unfortunately is no printable registration form online. Call your county clerk's office (see listing here) to request that a form be sent to you. The county clerk must receive your application at least 28 days before the election. If you are registering for the first time and register by mail, you must include a copy of a valid New Mexico drivers license or ID card.

Applications for absentee ballots must also be requested from your county clerk. Absentee voting begins 28 days before an election but you may request a ballot at any time--be sure to leave time for your ballot to arrive in Northampton and for the completed ballot to be sent back to New Mexico by election day!

New York

Visit the NYS Board of Election Home Page to download a voter registration form. Mail the form to your county board of elections (clickable county map). You will need to request an absentee ballot sent to your Smith address.

ATTENTION residents of ILLINOIS, LOUISIANA, MICHIGAN, NEVADA, and TENNESSEE: your state law requires that you register or vote in person, in your home town, before you may vote absentee. This means that, if you register to vote by mail, you will be ineligible to vote absentee until you have voted once at the polls in your home state. Since most elections take place during the academic year, you have two options: (1) register to vote in your home state when you return home for a break, or (2) register to vote in Northampton, using your Smith residence. For instructions on how to fill out a Massachusetts registration form using your Smith house as your residence, see the Massachusetts entry on this page.
