On-Call Procedures

SCEMS On-Call Uniform: SCEMS polo shirt/t-shirt/jacket, long pants (no holes/rips), close-toed/closed-back shoes, long hair tied back, no dangling jewelry.

  1. The person who will be driving the van that night needs to pick up the SGA van keys during SGA office business hours (8.30am - 4pm) on the day you'll be on call. NOTE that SATURDAY KEYS must be picked up on FRIDAY!
  2. Arrive at Public Safety at 7pm. Once both the FR and the EMT have arrived, pick up the phone in the waiting room and dial x2490. Ask the dispatcher to send an officer over to unlock the door.
  3. Both the FR and the EMT should sign in on the sign-in sheet. Look through the equipment bags to check nothing is missing, and make sure the clipboards have everything. The FR should take the smaller red backpack, and the EMT should take the bigger red backpack, as well as the oxygen tank. Exhange cell phone numbers and room extensions with the other person on call.
  4. Go upstairs and get the radios. Turn them on to channel 2. On your way out of the office, make sure someone signs out the master key.
  5. Ask the dispatch for a tone-out. It should go something along the lines of:
FR/EMT: "Smith College EMS to Public Safety, requesting tone-out." ("Requesting radio check" is also good.)
    Dispatch: "Stand by."
*You should hear the tone-out here -- it sounds like a long and loud beep.
Dispatch: "Public Safety to Smith College EMS."
    FR: "First Responder received."
    EMT: "EMT recieved."
  6. Pick up the van (if it is Saturday, the van is in the parking lot beside Davis). As per Sharon Fagan in the SGA office, you do not need to complete the passenger list paperwork.
  7. Be on call! If you get a call, you will hear a tone-out. Dialogue should go something along the lines of:
*Tone-out -- it sounds like a long and loud beep.
Dispatch: "Public Safety to Smith College EMS."
    FR/EMT: "Go ahead."
Dispatch: *They'll describe the patient and location here.
    FR: "First Responder received."
    EMT: "EMT recieved."
Whoever has the van can also make some indication that they're on their way, and if the person who is not driving is close enough to not need to be picked up, you can relate that over the radio as well. LISTEN for the other person on call with you to make sure they receive the call! If they don't respond, call them on their cell phone, room phone, or have the dispatch tone-out again.
  8. At 11pm, you need to tone out again with Public Safety. This is because they have a dispatch shift change. See above for procedure.
  9. Return the equipment when you have to return the van. If yesterday was Saturday, the Education Van needs to be returned to the parking lot beside Davis. Make sure you sign back in, make a note of any supplies you might have used that are running low, and turn off your radios when you put them back. You can drive the run report to Health Services before you return the equipment or walk it over after. It MUST be received there within 24 hours!
  10. Go to the Campus Center and drop off the van keys. Make sure you follow whatever SGA van procedures there are.
  11. Back
