About Smith Synchro

In its 89th year, synchronized swimming is one of the oldest club sports on campus. Originally, the club was only open to Smith lifeguards as a bonus. Hence, the team has traditionally been known by the nickname "The Lifeguards."

FAQ About Synchronized Swimming

What is that stuff you put in your hair?
The stuff in our hair is unflavored Knox gelatin, similar to that which is used in jell-o and cheesecake. The purpose is to keep the athlete's hair out of her face. It is applied as a warm, thick paste, hardens while air-drying, and is washed out in very hot water following the competition.

Can you hear the music underwater?
Yes, we can hear the music under water. Actually, sound travels better through water than through air. A specially designed underwater speaker carries 17-20 watts on the wires.

How long can you hold your breath?
A synchronized swimmer can hold their breath for a super long time! It really varies by swimmer, olympians can swim more than 75m unerwater without coming up for breath. We do lung-conditioning exercises to enhance our under-water breath-holding capabilities!

Is Synchronized Swimming an Olympic sport?
Yes! Synchro has been an Olympic sport since 1984
