Tae Kwon Do

Do-Jang Etiquette

-Remove all footwear before entering the do-jang.
-Bow before entering and leaving the do-jang.
-Wear only your do-buk (uniform) or athletic clothing during class. Remove all jewelry and/or watches.
-At the beginning of practice, quickly line up in rank order from left to right then front to back.
-If you are late, kneel on the side of the practice space. Face the instructor and raise your hand; do not join class until invited.
-When responding to a senior belt or instructor, address that person with “Sir” or “Ma’am.” Instructors may be referred to as “(surname) Johl-gyohl” and masters may be referred to as “(surname) Sah-bun-yim.” (Second- and third-degree black belts are instructors; fourth-degree black belts and higher are masters.)
-Upon commands by the instructor, all students must clearly respond “Yes Sir!” or “Yes Ma’am!”
-Face away from higher belts or the front of the practice space when adjusting your do-buk and dee.
-It is disrespectful to wash your belt. However, please keep your do-buks clean.
-Understand the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do:
   1) Courtesy
   2) Integrity
   3) Perseverance
   4) Self-control
   5) Indomitable spirit
-Understand the Tae Kwon Do oath:
   1) Observe the tenets of Tae Kwon Do.
2) Respect instructors and seniors.
3) Never misuse Tae Kwon Do.
4) Be a champion of freedom and justice.
5) Build a more peaceful world.

  • Practice and maintain dojang etiquette at all times, even when outside of the dojang, as Taekwondo philosophy and etiquette applies to our daily lives not only in the dojang, but outside of it as well.
