Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have Taekwondo experience to join?

Absolutely not! We welcome students of all martial arts backgrounds, even those with no martial arts experience. Many students, in fact, join the club as white belts. And remember, even black belts started as white belts too. Top of page

What would happen in a typical practice?

Each class varies from day to day, but we'll usually start off the class with some light stretching stretching and cardio to get the body warmed up first. Then afterwards, we may get to review some basic movements, learn poomsae (forms), gyoroogi (sparring), practice paddle drills, self-defense, or explore a new martial arts style outside of Taekwondo. Do I have to be in top shape to keep up?

Not really. Although the practices are rigorous, we expect only that when you participate, you will work your best and slowly improve yourself over time. Top of page

What if I have previous martial arts experience?

Then you'll probably learn Taekwondo more quickly! It never hurts to learn a new martial art. Top of page

What if I have a Kukkiwon Black Belt?

Then you should already be in the club!! There are other black belts in the club with whom you can train and sharpen your skills. You may also have the opportunity to compete, coach, or judge in the Ivy-Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League. And when you've joined and become comfortable with the club and its curriculum, you may also be asked to participate in regular instruction. Top of page

How long will I have to train before I can compete?

It is possible to compete during your first semester if you feel you're ready for it! We compete with the Ivy-Northeast Collegiate Taekwondo League, which invites athletes of all levels and abilities to participate. It's a great experience for beginners, and you would be competing against other college students with similar levels of experience in Taekwondo. Top of page

Do I need to buy any equipment?

What does the club do each semester?

For now, we are only practicing, but soon there are going to be promotion tests for those who wish to advance in their lessonsTop of page

Is there anything I should do before my first day of practice?

Yes! Please print and fill out the three required Student-Athlete Forms and submit them to the President of the club before you join your first practice. This is very important because if you do not submit the forms, the Athletic Trainer cannot allow you to practice with us. Top of page

What do I wear to practices?

Please wear loose and comfortable clothing, such as sweatpants and a t-shirt. Shorts are discouraged. Also, be prepared to work out without shoes and socks. Top of page

Are you going to beat me up?

We'll try not to. But remember, hard work only makes you stronger! Top of page
