Knocking opponents down, slamming then into the arena walls, pushing each other down on the cold ground, and last but not least, getting down and dirty: the beautiful experience of Smith ice hockey.

The team, a Smith club sport, played its first game of the season on Friday, October 29 at the Lossone Rink of the Williston-Northampton School, the team's home turf. Their opponent in the season opener was Skidmore College.

Intensely anticipated, the game had a large number of fans who came out to support the team. Smith ice hockey team gave their fans a show worth their time. Though the team did not get the opportunity to score any goals, excellent efforts were made by all players with direct passing and lead off fast breaks. One player, Suzi Metzger '00J, commented, "We were all really happy with how we played. There were skilled and beginner players on the ice. Everyone worked well together."

The goalies, Carolyn Rogers '00 and Katrina Mitchell '03 also played excellent games, with more than ten saves each, only allowing four Skidmore goals.

The final score was 0-4 in favor of Skidmore's team. However, the Smith ice hockey team promises to improve and capture more wins in future games.

Ice hockey's next game is on Tuesday, November 9 at Connecticut College.
