"With an ever-changing line-up of members, the Last Poets have been in continued existence ever since (save for a six-year hiatus between 1977 and 1984). The band’s current line-up has been together for 11 years and consists of original member Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan, who joined the group in time to record the band’s 1970 self-titled debut with Alan Douglas (of Jimi Hendrix fame), accompanied by drummer Babatunde. This line-up recorded the last album to be released under the Last Poets nomenclature, 1997’s Bill Laswell-produced Time Has Come, a remarkable updating of the group’s poetic delivery with modern beats and sounds."

The ubiquity of CCTV continues to fascinate me. I'm not quite as bothered by it as the iSee folks seem to be - but then, there isn't much I do in public that I don't assume is under surveilance anyway. David Brin (who wrote the book The Postman, which I'm told is better than the movie, and a bunch of other books, most of which I've read and loved) recently (1998) wrote a nonfiction book exploring some of the possibilities inherent in a heavily-camera'd society. Which he thinks is inevitable. Some of his arguments seem... flawed. But they're interesting anyway. The book is called The Transparent Society; the first few chapters are available here. I read them, and you should too

An article about savannah college of art and design, it's very long but it reads like a strange novel. As of now I'm still applying there. Does anyone know anything about the school today or the new administration?

"iSee is a web-based application charting the locations of closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras in urban environments. With iSee, users can find routes that avoid these cameras - paths of least surveillance - allowing them to walk around their cities without fear of being "caught on tape" by unregulated security monitors."

Three of the boys had sex with the girl, who did not live there, while the fourth boy, 15, filmed it with a video camera (via news.rotten.com)

Okay, first go read that article. It's short. I'll wait.

    Thanks.

Does anybody else feel like this article makes more of it than it is? I mean, sure, they made a big mess in the bathroom. But it kinda sounds like the girl knew what she was getting into, and wasn't being taken advantage of... but then, I'm male. Anybody else have an opinion?

"Alternatives to rabid careerism are socially acceptable again, and that's very nice. But as the articles pile up, as talk of the new simplicity becomes a locust-like drone (and subscriptions to Simplicity Magazine spike along with Soldier of Fortune), all these sanguine tales of slackerdom starts seeming like a smokescreen. The thing is, those who welcome joblessness for the chance it gives them to reassess their lives are a very thin substratum indeed, and the disproportionate play they're getting in the news gives an increasingly distorted picture of what it really means to see your income disappear. In the mainstream media, unemployment has mutated into a hot new trend. Welcome to the world's first lifestyle recession."

"The film Nothing So Strange, which premiered at Slamdance on Sunday, imagines Gates' murder and its aftermath. It's a tale of paranoia and police corruption, of conspiracy theorists and grassroots activism. And it comes with a brilliant and ingenious Internet component -- an entire Web universe of memorials to Bill Gates and conspiracy theorist sites."

    well, hello hello.

yep, i'm in florence. italy, that is, not massachusetts.

it's ridiculously smoggy. like LA in miniature, and with architecture from the 1470s instead of the 1970s. don't get me wrong, it is beautiful, but it's so... small! and there's not much to do besides go to museums, and there are only so many of them that'll fit in a city the size of the smith campus.

the food is stellar, though, and the family i'm living with is buckets o' fun. i tease the two early-teenage sons in my pidgin italian, fix the computer, and amuse the mom. and, on a bright note, i saw not one but TWO giant river rats (reminiscent of the ROUSes in the Princess Bride) wandering under the ponte Toby and i were crossing on our way home.

if anyone is tempted to come to florence, be warned that the air is heinously bad. i've actually seen people walk down the street wearing air-filter masks. i feel like i'm sandpapering my throat every time i breathe.

but it's been a fabulous vacation, don't get me wrong. it's so nice to have free time to wander, explore, eat olives, buy random knicknacks at street vendors...

i'll see y'all in another week.

sibling revelry: a net sampling sound toy: simply type in one or more search terms and the sibling revelry search engine will look far and wide for related sounds. as they are retrieved, they will be loaded into your instrument one by one... play back the sounds that arrive to create your own unique internet sound collage.

strangely enough, i too was Berlin-era Bowie. Brian Eno collaboration... mmm.

i also ended up being Thom Yorke when i took the "which radiohead band member are you?" test. yes, i _really_ need to stop looking at metafilter. anyway, i promised no more test links...

    | linkydink
    Yeah, me too, Berlin-era.

Look at my Livejournal friends page and prepare to be blinded by the sheer quantity of eyenumbing online-test-graphics.

hey all you kids out there in blogland! I'm taking a silkscreening class this wintersession and I'm thinking about making oodles of snazy tshirts to sell at the spring student sale.
If any of you wizkids have catchy ideas to put on a tshirt, this means you dkp, then let me know. I'll gladly give a tshirt or a cut of the profit or something if I use your idea.

Ok ok ok ok ok.... one more online test.... Which David Bowie are you?

Now... something tells me I've seen this before... that this is really old... but I couldn't be sure. Bleh. It just _feels_ like something I've done before. Ever feel that way?
