linkydink My older cousin has lived in san fransisco for about seven years now, I've never actually visited her there, but she seems to really love it. Her reccomendation is that you make sure to have a job, house, etc... lined up before you get out there. A lot of the tech types who lost work in the last few years have now filled up a lot of the lower level jobs- same goes for smaller, cheaper appartments. She can be a bit difficult to track down, but I could put you in touch with her if you've got any specific questions about what it's like to live and work there.

linkydink ok, kids. i'm trying to think of a cool way to rewrite (or recast or modernize or metaphor-ize) a fairy tale for my final Fairy Tales and Gender project. if there's anything you ever wondered about in Fairy Tales (how Little Red Riding Hood could ever mistake the wolf for her grandmother, for example), let me know. if there's any fairy tale that was your particular favorite, tell me that too. for the love, i don't want to have to write a paper. help me out here, people.

linkydink Breakcharmer's post reminds me of a good editorial from the NYT a few days ago: "The Soul of George W. Bush"
|
linkydink "Of course the United States seeks peace with people of all faiths. But what about people of no faith at all? In fact, the Bush administration never mentions nonbelievers; it never suggests that they, too, possess a moral sense that leads them to abhor terrorism and defend freedom."

linkydink Tierra Entertainment is remaking my favorite old computer games like Kings Quest and Quest For Glory, as well as making a Kings Quest parody called Royal Quest. I like these guys. The first Kings Quest is available for download and I suspect will shortly be taking up a lot of my free time.

linkydink o breakcharmer... the Lord came to me in a dream and He told me that we need to do a parody site. Photoshop in some red eyes, a little green tint to the skin, and we've got (cue theme music!) Zombie Jesus Jonesin' for Brains! you know you want to.

linkydink "The enclosed images are from 11x14 pencil drawings that are the result of an undertaking that began on Thanksgiving Day, 1987. I was awakened in the middle of the night with a clear, vivid impression that the Lord wanted me to do some special drawings -- drawings depicting ordinary people in their everyday environment . . . . with one important addition: the presence of Jesus Christ and His involvement in those routine activities."

linkydink Speaking of strange practices in public schools, I went to visit my old high school today to get some information from the student employment office (which continues to be open to students after graduation) I suddenly found myself subject to all sorts of new security regulations. They made me wait at the front desk while they called down to the office to make sure I had an appointment, and even after they knew my reason for being here was legit, they questioned me about my friends and my reasons for being there. Then someone from student employment had to come down to the front, take me by the arm and escort me to the office. The whole time I was not allowed to speak to the students; a friend of mine walked by while I was waiting by the front desk and came over to give me a hug, and the security guards got all irate- "no touching the students!" and told him to move along. I felt like I was going out for parole or something- they even yelled at the volunteers for dropping me off at the end of the glass hallway instead of taking the time to walk me the extra twenty feet to the desk! I don't know if this is standard procedure at most schools now, but when I went there they never cared who you were or where you were going to visit, as long as you didn't cause trouble or stay too long. I even knew all the security guards in high school, and never gave them any trouble, suddenly now I'm under suspicion. has anybody else had issues like this with their old school?

linkydink Some friends of mine make swanky electronic music as The Advanced Plants- check them out, I say!

linkydink "Donnie is also visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks. Late one night Frank leads Donnie out of his home to inform him that the world will come to an end in less than a month; moments later, the engine of a jet aircraft comes crashing through the ceiling of Donnie's room, making him think there might be something to Frank's prophesies after all." A new favorite film. Do see it.

linkydink "Remember that club scene that was so freaking cool in the original Blade? Don't you wish you could see a movie that was just 2 hours of that only twice as cool and moody. Well, that's pretty much Blade II." Friday. I'm excited.

linkydink Tonight, I'm going to get raving drunk with a bunch of my friends, and then we're all going to see Resident Evil. Maybe if they get drunk enough I'll be able to talk them into going to Halcyon. So if you see a largish group of geeky-looking people in funny clothes acting drunk, come and say hi.

linkydink Tonight, I'm going to NYC and seeing To You, the Birdie, and then seeing my friend spin at Halcyon in Brooklyn. You can hear him too, at midnight EST: (realaudio stream)

linkydink mmm... sexy laptops... Someone that is sexy turns me on, without being vulgar... so I wouldn't actually call strippers sexy, although stripping certainly can be. Showgirls and Striptease weren't sexy, but the chick in Better Off Dead is sexy. rowr. My friend Katya says "mysterious, yet oddly accessible."

linkydink a sort of informal poll, spawned from a conversation Timmy and i had last night: what's your definition of sexy? (referring to a person, not to, say, a laptop.) i've always had this sort of mental image of sexiness that's very intentional - people are sexy because they mean to be sexy (think strippers). i know that's not really true, but somehow it got cemented in my head that way. so i'm trying to figure out what other people think sexy is in an effort to synchronize my mental definition with something more realistic.

linkydink I've never seen even a single episode of MS-CL. Sometimes, when you Google the names of webcomics artists, you find interesting things. Damn, but she's had an interesting life. "Interesting", in the sense of the ancient curse "may you live in interesting times".

linkydink As they took him from the cross I, the centurion, took him in my arms- the tough lean body of a man no longer young, beardless, breathless, but well hung. Some people have no respect for art.

linkydink oh. my. god. i used one of these tonight (made by fingerworks) and it was amazing. i felt like i was in a scifi movie. the thing is totally flat, and you can type on it AND drag your fingers along it as a mouse. it interprets gestures for cut (pull your thumb and middle finger together) paste (spread them apart), open new files, and a huge variety of other commands. this thing is so fricking cool, i can't even adequately describe it to you. unfortunately, it's also $329 (for their most expensive model). maybe if i ever get a job...

linkydink i'm taking an awesome Comp Lit class that delves into Fairy Tales, their complex origins, and modern portrayals. if any of y'all see allusions to fairy tales in modern culture (ads, cartoons, books, whatnot) or modern versions of tales, lemme know and i'll bring 'em to class to show my prof.
