linkydink Americans are among the friendliest people on the planet, but avoid discussing anti-American politics or saying anything negative about their flag.

linkydink "The phrase 'under God' clearly violates the First Amendment's separation of church and state," said McDonald's CEO Jack Greenberg. "However, there is nothing in the Constitution that separates chicken and state, which is why we're proposing, 'One nation, six chicken McNuggets and a medium Coke, all for $1.99.'"

linkydink My Dad worked for Hewitt Associates, Inc. from the time he graduated college in the late 1950s up until he retired last December. Today, Hewitt made it's Initial Public Offering on the stock market, transforming itself from a private partnership into a "publicly-owned" corporation. Former Hewitt bigwigs are required to buy a certain amount of company stock and not sell it for at least a year. So now my family's financial future is pretty closely linked to how well this stock ("HEW") does. Weird, eh?

linkydink "Carabella is a modern girl. She's hip. She's wired. And she loves music. Join Carabella as she explores the vast world of online music. But be wary! As Carabella surfs, her privacy is in peril, and her ability to use and enjoy the music she has bought is in danger! Privacyactivism and the Electronic Frontier Foundation are proud to release version 1.0 of the Carabella video game. This interactive video game highlights the ways that consumers' privacy and fair use rights are being whittled away by digital rights management technologies, online spyware and data profiling services."

linkydink A.O. Scott says: "The appeal of fantasy has been especially powerful among those who find themselves marginalized by the brutal social universe of American secondary education — geeks, losers, nerds... Their devotion to sci-fi and sword-and-sorcery arcana invited ridicule, but was also a defense against it. But such mockery is, by now, obsolete. The triumph of fantasy culture, like the transformation of the cult of the computer into mainstream religion, is their revenge. We are all nerds now."I say: Whatever. A good book exists on its own terms; Mr. Scott writes as if a Tolkien fan's greatest hope was to find Gandalf on a lunchbox in CVS, as if devotees of "fantasy culture" should be thrilled and honored that their icons have been deemed worthy of assimilation into the holy miasma of mainstream pop-culture. Fuck that. (Monday 5pm: I fixed the link)

linkydink I have never been a sports fan but it's difficult here not to follow the world cup. I watched France's last game in the main square in font the of the Hotel De Ville and for the first time in my life, I found myself genuinely excited by a sports game. I was actually quite crushed when they lost. I still follow the games 5as best I can since the commentary's in french) at the dinner table with my host family. I found a free internet cafe in a much classier neighborhood and I am very happy. I can type on a French keyboard as well as I could on the ones back home.. and I know whan I get back i'm going to be hitting all the wrong leters for weeks.

linkydink June seems to be qn excellent time to be in Paris, it's festivel season and so I've been to the jazz festivel, the festival of comic books, and am looking into this film festivel i've seen posters for... And the tourists aren't out in swarms yet so it's still possible to see the big sights reletiely undistured. I have to pound all the keys here to make them work.. but at least the computer has all the necessary keys, yesterday I was trying to type without the letters "o" and "b". All the internet cafes in Paris seem to be situated in the worst parts of town, the street I'm on is all porn shops, bars, and internet cafes. my time's rally limited, ut there's a lot of things I want to talk about, I think i'll just saveit all for one bigpostwhen I get home, where I won't have to worry about missing key or how much time I take. if anyone here has been to Paris, i would loe some suggestions for things do to or see before I leave. also, word has it that They Might Be Giants are playing a concert at summerstage sometime in early August, and I will deinently be in attendance- anybody else want to come along?

linkydink I finished Doomsday Book by Connie Willis just the other day. Not a great book, I think, but the subject matter sure is interesting.

linkydink "Groucho Marx said during an interview with Flash magazine in 1971, "I think the only hope this country has is Nixon's assassination." Yet he was not subsequently arrested for threatening the life of a president. In view of the indictment against Black Panther David Hilliard for using similar rhetoric, I wrote to the San Francisco office of the Justice Department to find out the status of their case against Groucho."

As you pass one of the tubs, a motion-sensor chip triggers a digital sound device that yells, "Butter!" And another chip makes the tub wiggle slightly."

linkydink cmoore: Glad to have you back. Smith's email server has been very tempermental; are you still checking that address, or do you have a new one now that you've graduated?

linkydink hey kiddos. sorry i've been reclusive; between housepainting, attempting to keep toby's family sane, and flying to South Carolina to help my cousin with her twin babies, i haven't had much internet time. (on the plus side, i'm getting much better at typing with one hand while holding a baby in the other.) em: glad you're getting along well in france. eat some strange french foods and report back. ;) also, if you want to chat with someone who had a similar france experience, i'm sure coren would love to talk to you about it. breakcharmer: thanks for the chomsky/bennett debate. i am voyeuristically fascinated by watching smart, respected people turn into furious, stubborn children. i think somewhere in there is the key to making people get along, or understanding why they don't. more (maybe) when my arm isn't falling off from holding an 11 lb infant. jimmy: i'm not sure feeling on your booty is a wholesome, puritan family value. only you young deviants openly engage in that sort of behavior. tsk tsk.

linkydink hey, several days ago I wrote a very long post about how well I was ajusting to France, and how i'd finally figured out how to use the keyboards and the internet cafes etc... well as i was about to post it the workstation rebooted without warning and for no apparent reason- something out there is trying to keep me humble. I am definently doing better than I was a few days ago, i've picked up enough french to be barely understood, and i have been fortunate enough to make freinds with a group of very patient young French people who all happan to be fluent in English, they switch for me when I get too confused.I meant to write more about what I've been up to but now I've got to run to class, I can't get e mail at my regular address, but feel free to write mle at em277@aol.com, I've been pretty good about responding lately. I would definently like to make plans with anone who'll be in the lower NY,CT area whan i get back, and perhaps a few road trips to places farther off will be in order.

linkydink Quote of the day: 'Elroy Smith, the station's program director, said the station, where demonstrators several weeks ago protested to get the station to stop playing Mr. Kelly's music, decided today that it would play only the artist's "more positive" songs, not songs like "Feeling On Your Booty."'Man, if feeling on your booty's not positive, I don't know what is anymore...

linkydink jimmy: From the tone of the article, it sounds like the government did a real bad thing, putting out all that information. Read between the lines and you'll notice that businesses pushed this through to hamper disclosure on their environmental pollution. Pfft, consequences.

linkydink via Rhizome: "Currently on view at New York's New Museum of Contemporary Art is "Open_Source_Art_Hack," a group show of artists poetically conflating hacking with open-sourcing... the artists in this show are not rerouting police emergency calls to phone- sex lines or breathing heavily into payphone receivers to rip off Baby Bells. They are co-opting existing means of surveillance or surveillance-culture indoctrination to make new comments about life in network culture. Incidentally, by participating in a major museum show, they are also helping to launch "hacktivism" into the colloquy of contemporary art..."

linkydink CHOMSKY: First of all, the World Court condemned the United States for what it called "the unlawful use of force and violation of treaties." BENNETT: Which is not terrorism. CHOMSKY: That's international terrorism. BENNETT: No, it is not. CHOMSKY: Yes, it is exactly international terrorism. BENNETT: No, it is not, sir.
