linkydink AlterNet asks Naomi Klein, author of No Logo, "What do you say to people who are newly galvanized, by the war on terrorism or the corporate crisis, but who aren't sure how to get involved? To people who don't go to rallies because they seem clichéd and who don't vote because it seems pointless?"

linkydink Today is official day 1 of my "switch" to Mac OS X for personal use. I am going to try to use it for as much professional use, too, but I still have a laptop provided by my employer that dual-boots Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 7.3. With a little effort, I'm sure I'll be able to turn that one into a door-stop.

linkydink I have created... Vocaltones! It is a weblog for me to write things in. I think it will serve the same purpose my Livejournal did, except that I will feel more free to write things that felt out of place in a Livejournal. Also, it has given me a chance to flex my web design muscles a little. Hope y'all will visit it!

linkydink "Do you like free books? How about free book clubs?. Well, the books our members leave in the wild are free... but it's the act of freeing books that points to the heart of BookCrossing. Book trading has never been more exciting, more serendipitous, than with BookCrossing. Our goal, simply, is to make the whole world a library. BookCrossing is a book exchange of infinite proportion, the first and only of its kind."

linkydink "Elizabeth Harington's colophonic interpretation of Bach's mighty Art of Fugue is a fascinating journey into the artist's mind and aesthetic sensibilities, both clearly formed by her remarkable history and artistic skills. The transformation of Bach's own autograph pages into circular, lens-like designs, each quite different, realizes in print-form an aspect of Bach's attempt to create symmetries in the structure of time. Harington is not concerned with the surface appearances of the fugues - - in Bach's language their sound - - but with their inner natures, the myriad relationships of their internal dimensions."

linkydink hello everyone...remember me. i'm spending the weekend at school and besides the my friends vomitting and passing out...its just not the same. but luckily, i've finally found a job that suits me. and sadly, i no longer have faith in microsoft: "It's incredible to me that Microsoft would turn its back on Word 97 users," said Woody Leonhard, who has written books on Microsoft's Word and Office software. "They bought the package with full faith in Microsoft and its ability to protect them from this kind of exploit."

linkydink "ALBANY, New York (AP) -- On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, a date known as 9-11, the evening numbers drawn in the New York Lottery were 9-1-1. "The numbers were picked in the standard random fashion using all the same protocols," said lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman. "It's just the way the numbers came up." Lottery officials won't know until Thursday morning how many people played those numbers or the total payout, she said. For the evening numbers game, the New York Lottery selects from balls numbered zero to nine circulating in a machine at the lottery office. Three levers are pressed, and three balls are randomly brought up into tubes and then displayed." more weird shit, got this via e mail from a freind of mine and had to see if it was true.

linkydink it's sort of odd to be out here across the country where September 11th really didn't affect people as much. There was a service on campus but it was poorly attended, and the overwhelming sentiment is that we all need to just get over it as soon as possible. I felt compelled to do something today, but the service didn't appeal to me and I found nothing worthwhile on TV. So I went up to the library and had my own sort of meditation on the subject- alone on a big comfy couch with a copy of last Sunday’s New York Times magazine. There was a big article featuring different architects

linkydink Salon has a good article about weird responses to 9/11. A year later, I feel kind of embarassingly nonchalant about the whole business, and reading some of these made me feel a bit more comfortably normal.

linkydink "On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, Americans are reflecting on the impact those events had on their lives and their country. The Americans who work in this country's adult entertainment industry are doing the same, and AVN.com surveyed some of them to find out what their thoughts are."

linkydink Since most of it has been ripping into why the data on that site doesn't say anything about realtive OS security, then I don't have much to add ;) Suffice to say that even the term "relative OS security" is misleading; an OS's appropriateness can only be judged in relation it's environment, for it is entirely possible that a MS-DOS system could be as "secure" as an OpenBSD system, depending on the risks. Even depending on the risks, OSs are better protected in some ways and less in others, but all can be improved upon by a competent system administrator.
|
linkydink there's a bit of a discussion about the relative security of various OSs via the company email list. (note that most of it has been ripping into why the data/graphs on that site don't tell you anything.) i'll try to figure out why the recent posts haven't published. hmm.

linkydink "Senate Bill 2633, the Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act of 2002 (RAVE Act) targets music promoters and venue managers rather than drug users or drug dealers." this may be old news to everyone else here, but I wasn't aware of it until a freind of mine geve me some information about it. The above website is sort of hard to navigate, but if you go here there's an easy way to contact your senator. This is a more through examination of the law, including a copy of the actual text. If anybody knows more about this, or knows of another good article on it, post it up or e mail me.

linkydink "...Intellectuals and activists on the far left could not be troubled much with compassion or defense. Disconnected from Americans who reasonably felt their patriotic selves attacked, they were uncomprehending. Knowing little about Al Qaeda, they filed it under Anti-Imperialism, and American attacks on the Taliban under Vietnam Quagmire. For them, not flying the flag became an urgent cause. In their go-it-alone attitude, they weirdly paralleled the blustering right-wing approach to the world." -Todd Gitlin, New York Times

linkydink Well I have a friend in Porland, and he has a couch in Porland. and now he is going to have a Christian on a couch in Porland. There is this and the fact that it's just someplace I've heard good things about and there's nothing else really calling to me right now. and while Porland is stereotyped as being a mecca for potheads, lesbians, and fisherman, I am none of the above. because I am all three combined!

linkydink Hey I haven't written in forever either, but for those of you who don't know, I am going to I'm writing this first thing in the morning on my way to class, because I keep forgetting during the day but I realize I haven't given any of you an update in a long time. As soon as I can get my computer to connect to the internet with some degree of reliability, my posts will be more frequent. In the meantime, I’ve got plenty to do around here. Christian, I am also curious about your decision to move to Portland all of a sudden, I will miss you greatly! Though, I have always wanted to visit the city and now I have a most excellent reason to. If any of you ever happen to be in my general area, feel free to stop by, I'd love visitors. I have a decent sized room and lots of cool friends who have offered up their space (you can easily snag doubles as singles here) to any friend of mine.
