'All one needs to do is watch cribs and notice none of these people showing off their heated indoor pools or the PlayStation Two consoles installed in all twelve of their luxury cars have a library in their home. Or display a bookshelf, for that matter. No rapper on cribs has ever been quoted saying: “Yeah, this is the room where I do all my reading, nahmean?”'

"For me, this now agreed upon Thanksgiving symbolizes first and foremost the alarmingly subjective nature of history, which, as Howard Zinn reminds us, is almost always written by the winners. It symbolizes the triumph of football over religion, and of American commercialism over virtually everything standing in its wasteful path. And perhaps most importantly, it symbolizes the lies and half-truths on which a profoundly diverse country must depend in order to prop up the specious concept of a broadly shared civil religion or national identity."

thanks, blue. i've been looking for a good brand of miso for a long time. i'll have to order some.

in other news: woo! it's snowing like crazy up here! however, i will still be in the land of Greenwich/Brooklyn for the next couple of days. In light of my impending birthday, my mother has decreed that on Friday afternoon we will decorate gingerbread houses and be merry. Anyone who's in the area and wants to come (breakcharmer? jimmy? kangaroo? amy j?) should do so. email me or give me a call.

christ: congratulations! what's the theatre working on now?

After three months of dicking around I've finally found a job, insert sound of Flava Flav going,"yeah, boy!" I'm working at the Miracle Theater, a small performance place here in Portland. It's pretty basic stage stuff, but there's still that 'begining a new job anxiety'.

"What would Jesus drive? That's the provocative question a group called the Evangelical Environmental Network is asking, and it claims that the answer is something fuel efficient. In an ad campaign that will air in four states, the group says Christians have a moral imperative to preserve the environment by giving up their gas-guzzling SUVs, minivans and pickups."

"...But when the sidewalk scribblings began to include vulgar references to specific faculty members, Mr. Bennet said, he decided that enough was enough. In October, he declared an open-ended moratorium on a commonplace Wesleyan practice that many students prize: chalking."

Best song to wake up to:
every morining my sister used to blast old british oi music loud enough for the whole house to hear. It used to make me bury my head back under the covers, or throw a boot in the general direction of her door. But now it's kind of a nice way to wake up, particularly if you have an early morning class, (or job) you really don't want to go to.

Best song to play over and over after a breakup:
"sleep to dream" by Fiona Apple.

Song that reminds you of the good times in high school:
"Friday I'm in love" by the cure and "the statue got me high" by They Might Be Giants come to mind.

Song that makes you remember the hell that was high school:
Appropriately, "Hell" by the Squirrel nut zippers.

Song that makes you want to grab the nearest good-looking person and do
obscene things to them:
I've forgotten the name of the song... let me get back to you on that one.

Song that always makes you dance, even in inappropriate places:
It doesn't take a lot to get me dancing- anything by Fatboy Slim.

Song that best represents your outlook on life:
"I'll know" by Fiona Apple. "Go west" by Liz Phair.

Best song to blast after a really bad day at work/school:
"Dry the rain" by the Beta Band

Best song to crank while driving 80 miles an hour on the open highway:
the cover of "backhand" by Keith Jarrett on "As Long as You're Living Yours"

Best song to wake up to:
I don't remember the artist or title, but it's a techno track that opens with Tina Turner screaming "THUNDERDOME!" from the Mad Max movie. Chris'll know what I mean.

Best song to play over and over after a breakup:
Survivor by Destiny's Child... no, wait, Time by Tom Waits ;)

Song that reminds you of the good times in high school:
Again, I don't remember the artist or title, but it was something about a genie of the lamp. I hope Jimmy remembers what I mean.

Song that makes you remember the hell that was high school:
Welcome To The Jungle by Guns 'N Roses.

Song that makes you want to grab the nearest good-looking person and do obscene things to them:
Angel by Massive Attack.

Song that always makes you dance, even in inappropriate places:
Singin' In The Rain by Gene Kelly.

since you've all been on the subject of new mexico lately... does anyone live, or have friends that live in the arizona, new mexico, the tip of texas, or oklahoma area, that would be willing to put up a poor traveler with only a college degree and massive amounts of loans to show for herself.
i've considered taking the more northern route from cali, i have enough people to stay with on that route, but seeing as how it's getting into snow season, that route will not be the best of choices for me and my little daewoo. so i'm looking for good willed souls that would like to let me sleep on a couch or a floor for a night between socal and nashville.

"SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - New Mexico voters will decide on Tuesday whether they want "idiots" and "insane persons" to vote in their state.
Under the state's Constitution, drafted in 1912, "idiots" and "insane persons," as well as those "convicted of a felonious or infamous crime" are currently prohibited from voting."

'The recent announcement of a coming reality show called ''American Candidate'' should dispel any lingering notions of a division between Spectacle and State. Inspired by the success of ''American Idol,'' ''American Candidate'' will follow 100 contestants/presidential-hopefuls as they undertake a virtual campaign...'
I like Colson Whitehead.
