"Let me be outraged and annihilated, but for one instant, in one being, let Your enormous Library be justified. "

"In an unannounced move, Emily Reilly, Mayor of Santa Cruz, walked onstage and read a lengthy declaration, publicly recognizing Wilson’s achievements as 'guerrilla ontologist, psychedelic magickian, satiric old crank, Outer Head of the Illuminati, quantum psychologist, sit-down comic/philosopher, Discordian Pope' and several other titles of renown; she then concluded her speech by declaring July 23rd 'Robert Anton Wilson day', among the cheers and standing ovation of the crowd."

"It’s been a good year for comic-book fans, cinematically speaking. Such luminaries as Spider-Man, Daredevil, the X-Men, and the Hulk have all rampaged across the silver screen in the last 12 months, and today we get one more: the highly anticipated LXG.......The book’s author, Alan Moore, was able to create this literary-parallel universe because the protagonists are all within the public domain, and so are not owned by any one person or corporation, and thus available for anyone to use without having to pay royalties. This is why you can watch low-budget Sherlock Holmes mysteries on PBS, buy a copy of Alice in Wonderland for under five bucks, and see Shakespeare in the park for free."

"Where have all the lisa's gone"
Glad to see this is still up from last week's NYT magazine. My sister works at a daycare center in town and we have recently had many discussions on the rising popularity of unusual names. I would have included a quote but had some difficulty getting the text to copy. Is it just me, or has anyone else had trouble copying and pasting text from NYT online articles? Is this some kind of new anti-pirating feature or is my browser just being cranky?

"A Greenwich man who was arrested on charges that he videotaped couples having sex in a Greenwich park claims he has a right to videotape because he was in a public place."

"Prof Hawking, 61 — famed for his best-selling book A Brief History Of Time — watched her strip naked during a string of steamy dances. They then shared a cuddle."

"It's going to get ugly. And then it's going to get boring. So, we have two options here. We can add gay marriage to the short list of controversies—abortion, affirmative action, the death penalty—that are so frozen and ritualistic that debates about them are more like Kabuki performances than intellectual exercises. Or we can think outside the box. There is a solution that ought to satisfy both camps and may not be a bad idea even apart from the gay-marriage controversy."

COPENHAGEN — Ever since a group of squatters took over an abandoned military fortress in the heart of this intimate, orderly city 32 years ago, their "Free Town," Christiania, has caused the government untold heartburn.
