I've never thought that dance was for me.  In fact, I truly believed that it was something you can't learn unless you start as soon as you are out of the diapers. My home city in Russia, Fokino, had a pretty good ballroom dance team, and I remember how jealous (in a good way, of course) everyone was of the people who could do THAT.    I wasn't an exception.  Still, it didn't occur to me then to join the team and learn it myself.  What really made me change my mind and finally decide to  learn it was a person  I've met in "OKEAH" in 1998 - I'm sure people who know me know exactly what I'm talking about.  And those who don't - I'll explain:  this guy was a professional.  And do you know how embarassing it is to dance with one if you have no idea about a single move?   Well, now I don't regret going through all those unpleasant emotions. In fact, I am really grateful to the guy,  since he was the strongest incentive for my decision to start dancing.   Oh well, the Russians say: "Vsyo, chto ni sluchaetsya, sluchaetsya k luchshemu",  what basically means "Everything that happens, happens for the best".
...But that was just an introduction...
My first semester at Smith I found out that UMass (University of Massachusetts at Amherst) has a ballroom dance team.  To make the long story short: I tried out (I almost had a nervous breakdown on the spot, by the way) and  made it!  So I've been on the team since March, and I LOVE it!   Of course, I'm a long way from those glamorous dancers you see on TV, but I can proudly admit that I've learned something!  I'm staying on the team next year as well, so I'm looking forward to improving my techniques and devoting more time to Standard dances.  By the way, I'm still looking for a partner!  Auditions will be held September 2, 1999 at 2 p.m.
