Yes, dance is life

One of the original goals that I set out to accomplish while in Ecuador was to learn how to dance the latin dances. By "the latin dances" I meant salsa, merengue, cha-cha, tango, mambo etc. Upon arrival on the USFQ campus in Cumbaya, Ecuador I promptly signed up for danza latinoamericana and let the fun begin...

My dance teacher was an adorable little man from Cuba who had a perfect dancer's body and the perfect little chihuahua face to go along with it. He was adorable, and a miracle worker. He taught a group of mostly rhythmically impaired (or at least underdeveloped) gringos how to dance merengue, cha-cha, salsa and a little mambo. I had to wait to get back to the States to learn tango. I still want to learn to more rumba and samba.

Swing was my first dance, taught so kindly to me by Hal Daugherty to the tunes of the former "Mel Flood's Big Band". I forced my little brother Justin and my little sister Bahiyyih to swing a few years ago but have always seemed to lack a partner myself...

Now I have salsa! While I was in Ecuador I went out dancing with friends at least two nights per week and usually three times. In addition to the clubs, I often spent a couple of nights per week dancing in my friend Lucy's dance school, Tropical Dance.

Now that I am back to the East Coast for 9 months at Smith (my senior year, yay!) I am continuing to dance and hunt out good dance opportunities.

So, here are some helpful links I've compiled for the avid ballroom/ club dancer... There are some cool sites that can help a traveler locate cool places to dance anywhere in the world. Enjoy!
