Remarks: This is one of several similar cartoons in response to the great rail strike of 1877. Much as Harper's was willing to denounce the railroad "monopoly," in a strike it always sided with the carriers. However, in many images the magazine suggests that it was the railroad "monopoly" that was leading to labor radicalism.
