African Elephant

The African elephant, Loxdanta africana, is genetically different from its Asian relative. There are two subspecies of African elephants:

  • Savannah, Loxdanta africana africana, is grey.
  • It weighs between 4 and 7 tons and is between 9 and 12 feet.
  • Forest, Loxdanta africana cyclotis, is dark grey.
  • It weighs between 2 and 4 tons and is between 6 and 9 feet.
