The purpose of today's lab is twofold:
- to introduce you to Windows 95 running on Burton Basement PCs
- to explore some network software.
Sit down at a PC with your partner. If the machine is not powered
up, press the top button on the system unit. If you don't see
the Enter Network Password window, then shut down the machine
as described at the end of this lab, and start again.
Log in with the same username that you use on Sophia, password
CHANGME, and network BASS.
If you get a little window asking whether you want to retain individual
settings, click on No.
Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner
of the screen. A pop-up menu will appear. Move to HELP
and click. A "Windows Help" window will appear. Click
on the Index tab. Type in: taskbar. Find and highlight
About the taskbar. Then press the DISPLAY button
at the bottom of the window.
Choose some of the topics here, ending with Close, Minimize,
and Maximize Windows. When the little window for this topic
pops up, click on the button to the left of X in the upper
right hand corner. This maximizes your window. Click on that
button (which now looks different) again, to restore the window
to its former size. To the left of the maximize button
is the minimize button. Click on it. The window disappears -
but on the taskbar on the bottom of your screen there is a raised
button for this window (called "What's New?"). Click
on this button to restore the window.
Close the "What's New?" window by clicking on the X
button in the upper right hand corner, then close the "Windows
Help" window the same way.
Click on the START button, and choose MS-DOS prompt. An MS-DOS window will appear. MS-DOS is the universal PC operating system,
underlying Windows 95, and this is the only time we will need
it in this course.
At the > prompt, type SETPASS. Follow instructions.
Be sure to use a new password that you will remember easily,
or to write down your new password! Then close the DOS
window.
We will use Word again later in this lab, so right now we just
want to make sure that you can "launch" Word, and save
the documents that you create.
Click on the Start button. Move the mouse to highlight
Programs, and another menu will pop up. Highlight Microsoft
Office, then click on Microsoft Word.
Type in some text, e.g., "This is a test".
Pull down the File menu, and choose Save. Enter
a file name at the bottom, e.g., test. Pull down the Save
In list. You will see your home directory on Bass (your account
name, on Bass Drive H:). Select this directory. Then press the
Save button.
You have now successfully created and saved a Word file. Close
the Word window.
Click on the Start button, and choose Programs, Internet
Tools, and QVT Terminal. QVT is a program that implements
the Telnet protocol. Choose File/Open, type in Sophia
as the Host Name, and click on OK. You may now log in
to your Sophia account.
Run Pine. Find a message from CS101a00, with the header "Thursday
lab". After reading this message, type the command E
to Pine. Pine will ask for a file name; use bergmann.doc.
After you leave Pine, type ls to see the files in your
directory. There should now be a file called bergmann.doc.
Now run finger: type finger. Sometimes we want to save program
output into a file. Here's how: type finger > finger.doc.
This means: put the output from the finger program into a file
called finger.doc. When you get Sophia's % prompt,
type ls again, to verify that you have a file called finger.doc.
You may now logout from Sophia, and close the QVT window.
FTP allows us to transfer files between different computers
on a network.
Click on the Start button, and choose Programs,
Internet Tools, and WS_FTP. Enter Sophia
as the Profile Name and User Name, enter your Sophia account name
as the User ID, and enter H: as the initial directory for
your local PC. Enter your Sophia password at the prompt.
On the left side of the FTP window, you will see the
files in your account on Bass drive H:. On the right side, you
will see the files in your Sophia account. Find and highlight
bergmann.doc on the right side, and click the arrow
button that points left to your Bass account. You should now
see bergmann.doc on the left side as well. Highlight
finger.doc on the right, and click the arrow button
that points to your BASS account again. This will transfer that
file as well.
Close the FTP window.
Launch Word for Windows. Open the file bergmann from your
Bass home directory (drive H). Answer the first two questions
that I asked you in that message. Now open the file finger,
and Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy to copy the contents
onto the clipboard. From the Window menu, choose bergmann,
and paste the contents of the clipboard into the file bergmann
after the third question.
If you've done this successfully, the output from the finger program
on Sophia appears as the answer to the question!
Now save this file with File/SaveAs, using axxayy
as the filename, where xx are the last
two digits in one of your account names, and yy
are the last two digits in the other - e.g., a54a32 for accounts
cs101a54 and cs101a32.
Close the Word window.
Windows Explorer is a file management program. It allows you
to move files from one place to another (and to do many other
things as well!)
Click the Start button, and choose Programs and Windows
Explorer.
Click on your Bass account name on the left. (To widen the left part of the window, put the mouse on the vertical line
between the left and right parts - the cursor will change to have
a double-arrow - and drag that line to the right.)
You will now put a copy of your file axxayy into the Computer Literacy dropbox. Click on the file axxayy. Then choose Edit/Copy. Then click on Literacy on Bass/Mac/Basscour on the
left, double-click on Dropbox which now appears
below Literacy on the left, and choose Edit/Paste.
If you did this correctly, you will see your file on the right
side of the window, under "Contents of Dropbox". If
this doesn't happen, be sure to seek help! You must do this part
successfully to get credit for this week's lab!
Next, you should store a copy of the file axxayy on a new floppy.
Place your floppy in the disk drive. Find 3-1/2 floppy
A: on the left of the Explorer window. Click the RIGHT
mouse button. Choose format: and press Start.
When you are finished formatting, you may store a copy of axxayy
on the floppy by double-clicking your Bass account name on the
left, clicking on axxayy on the right, choosing
Edit/Copy, clicking on 3-1/2 floppy a: on
the left, and choosing Edit/Paste.
You may now close the Explorer window. Don't forget to remove
your floppy!
Click the Start button. Choose Programs/Internet Tools/Netscape
Navigator.
First, make sure you can still find the Web Page for this course.
Second, visit the Weather Channel home page by entering the URL
http://www.weather.com in the Location box (when
you do this the word Location will change to Go
to). Find the current weather report for Springfield,
Mass., and write down the temperature and the wind direction
and velocity (you will need to know these to complete today's
lab).
Third, visit the Boston Computer Museum by entering the URL http://www.tcm.org.
Find the monthly calendar, and write down when they offer "An
Introduction to the Internet".
Fourth, visit the Smith College gopher site, with URL gopher://gopher.smith.edu.
Search the Smith College campus directory for my (Merrie's) office
address. Write it down.
Fifth, check out NetNews. Click on Window, and
choose Netscape News. Click on Options, and select
Show All Newsgroups. Find the smith.cs.101 newsgroup,
the open it, and read Gunnar's welcome message. Find the smith.cs
newsgroup, open it, and find and read a message that tells you
when Microsoft Scholarship applications are due. Write this down.
Note: if you aren't seeing the message you're trying to
read, maximize the window.
You may now close Netscape, and create a second document to submit
to the Literacy Dropbox. Create a new file with Word and record
in it the answers to the 5 questions in this section. Save to
your Bass account with filename bxxbyy, and use
Explorer to transfer this file to the Computer Literacy Dropbox.
To complete your lab, you must post news to the Computer Literacy
newsgroup. What should you say? Anything! Suggestions: share
the URL for a neat Web site, share the name of a neat newsgroup,
rave about this instructors in this course,
Launch Netscape again, and pull down the Options menu.
Choose Mail and News Preferences. Click on the Identity tab,
and fill in your name, email address (cs101axx@sophia.smith.edu),
and Organization (Smith College, of course!).
Then press OK. Note: each time you log on, you need
to set this identity before posting news.
Open the Netscape News window. Find and open the smith.cs.101 newsgroup. Now press the To: News button. Fill in the subject, type in your message, and then press the Send button. Wait a few
minutes, and then check to see that your message appears in the
newsgroup! If it doesn't, you may have to run through these steps
again.
10. Shut down the machine.
Click on the Start button, click Shut Down, choose
"Shut down the computer", and press YES.
HOMEWORK: Read chapters 1-3 and 7 of Every Student's
Guide to the World Wide Web. Have a good break!
