Project 4: Final Project: 17th of May
The Idea
I wanted to do something that had to involved some game controller, preferably the Wii remote. Also inspired by the works of Sam and Cristine in our last project I wanted to do something with more relevance to the present. However I wanted to stay out of heavy politics and rather comment on social issues and most imporantly that of racism, immigration, national identity and unity.
The 17th of May is the national holiday, since it is the day the constitution was signed. On this day Norwegian gather together, play games, eat good food and walk in 17th of May Parades. This is the day were the most people where their national costume in Norway and immigrants are encouraged to wear their own national costume.
I wanted to use pictures and text, together with sound recordings of lines of the Norwegian national anthem to create an enviroment where the user can use the Wii remote to navigate through and discover facts about Norway, Immigration, 17th of May and so on.
Immigration into Norway, 17th of May and other facts
Norway has a popluation of 4.7 million. 415 000 of these are immigrants, making it 8,9 % of the population. Roughly 54 000 persons comes from the other nordic countries, 51 000 is from the rest of West Europe and North America, 80 000 from East Europe and 230 000 from Turkey, Asia, Africa and South America. Most first generation immigrants are from Sweden, Poland and Denmark. 47% of the immigrant population are Norwegian citizens.
The Norwegian constitution was signed 17th of May, 1814. This day is celebrated every year with parades, games and general festivities. Norwegian of all ages dress up in national costumes and wave flags.
