Evolutionary Computation Applications to Biomathematics

Computer Science: Lee Spector (Hampshire College)

Evolutionary computation methodologies combine ideas from evolutionary biology and computer science to produce systems that solve problems using algorithms based on genetic representation, random variation, and problem-oriented selection. These methodologies can be applied to problems in many disciplines, and the PI has used them in areas including pure mathematics, quantum computing, and software engineering. Within the framework of the Four College Biomathematics Consortium we will apply these methodologies to problems in biology and biochemistry. Initial work in this direction uses genetic programming to investigate solubility and bioavailability.
