Students who accept an NSF UBM fellowship must commit to participating in a collaborative research project involving the use of mathematical or computational tools to address questions in the life sciences. The commitment is for two years plus the summer in between.

Students should be committed to taking coursework suited for the pursuit of their project, in agreement with their 4CBC research advisers and the 4CBC steering committee. This will include courses outside of their major (for example, math or computer sciences majors will take life sciences courses and vice versa.)

Required activities include:
1. Present research progress each semester in a written report and in an oral presentation. (Similar to honors thesis interim report/presentation.
2. Write a project proposal (due by the end of the first fellowship year) for second year research project.
3. Be prepared to participate in a professional biomath conference or NSF meeting (expenses paid) with other students involved in similar programs across the U.S.
4. Participate in mentoring activities with junior students.
5. Create an e-portfolio documenting their research progress.
6. Write a paper based on biomath research project, due at the end of senior year, and present the findings in a senior presentation forum. (This could be their honors thesis.)

Progression to senior fellow status is conditional upon satisfactory performance during the junior fellowship year.
