Intellectual Property Policy

Smith College’s INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER POLICY applies to full- and part-time faculty members, administrative officers, staff members, and students engaged in teaching, research, study, or other forms of activity within the College or in connection with any College program. The following information is intended to clarify the policy’s terms as they might impact staff and faculty at the Smith College Center for Early Childhood Education, but it does not amend or change the college’s Policy terms.

The Smith College Center for Early Childhood Education encourages and supports employees in participating in scholarly activity to share research and best practices in early childhood education with the broader community within and outside the College. Smith College and the Center for Early Childhood Education may provide resources to support this work, such as  release time, funding for travel and professional activities, facilities, equipment, personnel, and information resources.

Teachers and administrators in the Center for Early Childhood Education department prepare a wide variety of presentations and documents related to early childhood development and education. All products, e.g., images, documents, reports, presentations, brochures, posters, handbooks, websites, including work that is outside an employee’s regular duties and supervised or authorized by the college, are considered “work for hire” and remain the property of the college.

The College will typically grant the creator of intellectual property created at the college or by a college employee using college resources, a license for its use, subject to the appropriate release forms. A standard condition of such releases is that the creator must acknowledge the college’s contribution to the work. Smith College retains all rights to control the use of its name, logo, and trademarks in association with any work.
