This summer Smith College is offering two Global Engagement Seminars for rising juniors and seniors and Ada Comstock Scholars. The three-month programs—which are taking place in Jerusalem and Costa Rica—are designed to provide students with an opportunity to take part in both classroom learning and internships and are led by faculty.
In Jerusalem, students are exploring the relationship between Jerusalem’s sacred religious space and sacred political space, focusing on religious history and urban development. Faculty members Justin Cammy, associate professor of Jewish studies, Suleiman Mourad, professor of religion, and Donna Robinson Divine, professor of government led three and a half weeks of seminar discussions and site visits; students are now wrapping up two months of internships.
Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, 14 Smith students are examining the balance between development and environmental sustainability in regard to the globalization of the country. The students are accompanied by faculty members Gary Lehring, associate professor of government, and Amy Rhodes, associate professor of geosciences. Following their coursework, each student participating in the Global Engagement Seminar will complete an eight-week internship; during that time students will live with Costa Rican families.
