Visiting faculty fellowship brings Smith professors to Japan

Founded in 1972, the Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is a two-semester study abroad program at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan sponsored by a consortium of fifteen American colleges and universities, including Smith College. Each year approximately 40 students attend the full academic-year program, where they study the Japanese language and take other courses in English.

The program also offers faculty members an opportunity to teach and research in Japan at the AKP Center. Smith faculty from all fields are welcome to apply as AKP Visiting Faculty Fellows and several members of Smith’s faculty have participated in the fellowship program in the past.

In 2001, for instance, History Professor Daniel Gardner, taught a course called “Looking for Confucius in Contemporary Japan” while visiting AKP on a faculty fellowship. In 2003, Professor of Japanese Tom Rohlich taught “The Literature of Space and Place in The Tale of Genji”. Most recently, Professor of Buddhist Studies Jamie Hubbard taught “A Pilgrim’s History of Kyoto” at AKP in the fall of 2010.
