Nationally recognized as a center for the study of Africa, the Five Colleges work together to provide a program in African Studies.
Each participating college (Smith, Mount Holyoke, Amherst, Hampshire, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst) sustains its own programs and courses relating to Africa. The Five College African Studies Council promotes collaboration and encourages cross-disciplinary and cross-campus exchange.
Five College Africa Day 2011 will be held in the Smith College Campus Center on Saturday, November 5 from 1-6 p.m. Kicking things off with a keynote presentation is Joseph Sebarenzi, former speaker of the Parliament of Rwanda; Sebarenzi will speak on “Healing After Hardship: Survival and Forgiveness in Post-Genocide Rwanda” at 1 p.m. in the Carroll Room.
Other events include performances by the Five College African Drumming Ensemble, various student panels, a reception with Afro-Caribbean food, and a dance party hosted by the Smith African & Caribbean Students Association. Swahili, Yoruba and Zulu language departments will also present throughout the day and representatives from study abroad programs in Africa will be available.
