Last week, Pakistan appointed Sherry Rehman ’85 its new ambassador to the United States.
Sherry, a former journalist, is a member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and will replace Husain Haqqani as the Pakistani ambassador to the U.S.
Like fellow Pakistani Smith alumna Shehrbano Taseer ’10, Sherry has been outspoken about reforming the country’s blasphemy laws. Sherry has authored bills including the Women Empowerment Bill, Anti-Honor Killings Bill, Domestic Violence Prevention Bill, Affirmative Action Bill, and Hudood Repeal Bill. She has also supported the Freedom of Information Bill and the Press Act, which “prevents working journalists from being arrested under the 1999 Press Ordinance”.
