Hian Kek Yeo ’15 is enjoying her first year at Smith College. From Singapore, “Kek” chose to come to Smith because of its “open curriculum, the great academics, the dedicated professors, and the unique housing.” She also credits the alumnae in Singapore with boosting her excitement about Smith; the alumnae hosted a party in Singapore and met with new first-year students.
Kek is genuinely enthusiastic about the variety of classes available to her. Though officially undecided about a major, she is interested in the English Language and Literature program at Smith and would also like to study Japanese. She also thinks that the new Concentration in Book Studies “looks fascinating”.
This bubbly first-year also great things to say about her classes and professors. Kek enjoyed her fall sociology class with Professor Kat Rickenbacker because “the discussions in class were always thought-provoking” and recommends taking First-Year Seminar The Groves of Academe with Professor Pat Skarda because, as Kek says, the professor “is awesome.”
To potential international students, Kek says “choose Smith! Even if English is not your first language, there is plenty of help and support provided. The faculty are very friendly and they genuinely care about the student.” She also “loved the amount of support and resources the college provides for the students” and even makes an effort to wake up in time for breakfast each day because “the food is delicious.”
Good luck with your second semester, Kek!
