Smith College has scheduled a symposium to mark the one year anniversary of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis which struck Japan last year.
The Smith Remembers Fukushima symposium will take place on Saturday, March 10 in Hillyer/Graham Hall. Opening remarks by Smith College Provost Marilyn Schuster, Global Studies Center Director Greg White, and East Asian Studies Director Suzanne Gottschang will begin at 9 a.m.
From 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. a roundtable discussion “The View from Kyoto” will feature student panelists Kaitlin Eison-Washington ’12, Hannah Chan ’12, Hannah Pepin ’12, and Kristin Peck ’12, as well as Maki Hubbard from the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures. and Jamie Hubbard from the Department of Religion. The panel will be moderated by Marnie Anderson in the history department.
A second panel will take place from 10:45 a.m. until noon and will feature “The View from Smith” as presented by professors from the departments of history, geosciences, physics, chemistry, East Asian Languages & Literatures, and government.
The symposium will wrap up with closing remarks from Global Studies Center Director Rebecca Hovey and two Smith professors.
