Members of the Smith College Club of Great Britain will be attending the UK premiere of Saving Face, the Academy Award winning documentary by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ’02. The film will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with Sharmeen and Dr. Mohammad Jawad, the doctor featured in the film.
Saving Face exposes how acid attacks affect women in Pakistan. In Pakistan, a woman’s face is deemed to be her greatest asset. Someone seeking to punish a woman need only destroy her face to do her permanent harm—both physically and socially. The film focuses on one courageous man, Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who offers a glimmer of hope for women who are otherwise ‘dead’ to society.
The screening will take place the the Curzon Cinema on Wednesday, March 28. Tickets sold out very quickly, and club members are excited to celebrate the film and it’s recent Oscar win with its maker, a fellow Smith alumna.
