Smith College’s study abroad fair took place this Tuesday, offering students the opportunity to learn about Smith’s numerous study abroad options and partner programs. Nearly half of Smith students study abroad for either a semester or two during their junior years. Many Smithies also participate in summer study abroad programs.
Jessica Hodder ’14 is a theater major and anthropology minor. She hopes to use her Praxis internship this summer to unite two of her interests—theater and social justice—in Kenya, where she spent part of her childhood. Jessica is also interested in working with development programs in communities struggling with AIDS. She was using the study abroad fair to make contacts with programs that work in Africa, such as the Kenya Semester program, even though she plans to study abroad in the summer.
Eirini Tsekitsidou ’16 was also at the study abroad fair to research summer programs. Eirini is hoping to visit the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. A native of Greece who is planning to major in neuroscience, Eirini said she had visited Denmark before and enjoyed it, and liked that it was fairly close to her home and family.
There were also, of course, students interested in the “traditional” junior year abroad experience. Emma Sager ’15 is majoring in comparative literature with French and Italian. Since she must choose between Smith’s Florence and Paris programs next year, Emma wants to also pursue summer programs in Italy if possible.
If you missed out on the Study Abroad Fair, visit Smith’s study abroad page for program details; you won’t be able to experience Tuesday’s beautiful September weather, but there’s still plenty of interesting and useful information to be found.
