Smith’s annual International Photo Contest showcases photographs submitted by students who studied abroad during the past academic year or summer. This year, the contest drew a record number of submissions from Smithies who traveled to 25 different countries. The contest’s five categories capture the essence of study-abroad experiences: 1) cultural encounters, 2) daily life, 3) learning moments, 4) land/sea/city/culture-scapes, and 5) natural ecology.
A faculty panel of three jurors chose outstanding photographs from each category, and visitors to the exhibit cast votes for “viewers’ choice” photos. This year, the faculty panel consisted of Janie Vanpee (French studies & Comparative Literature); Elliot Fratkin (Anthropology); and Fraser Stables (Art).
Each category demonstrated remarkable examples of striking beauty, images, or form. For those interested in viewing the photos, please visit our Facebook album for picks in each category.
