Lecture by Zen Master Subul Sunim scheduled

On Monday, Smith presents “Zen Meditation for Today: A New Approach by a Modern Korean Master”. The Venerable Subul Sunim is Head Teacher of the International Seon Center at Dongguk University in Seoul, Korea, and abbot of Beomeosa Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the principal Buddhist denomination in Korea. He teaches a uniquely Korean Buddhist style of meditation which explores the deepest recesses of one’s personal identity and sense of self. This type of Zen questioning meditation has some similarities to the koan practice of Japanese Zen, but it developed in Korea centuries earlier. In this talk, Subul Sunim will explain his approach to questioning meditation and discuss his successes in adapting it to the needs of laypeople in modern secular society.

Subul Sunim’s lecture will be held on Monday, November 5 from 7:30-9 p.m. in Neilson Browsing Room.
