Remembering Fukushima and Beyond

In the coming days, several events are planned at Smith College to commemorate the anniversary of Japan’s 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear accident.

The first event is the screening of two videos Japan’s Killer Quake and Resilience–Protecting Today on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Seelye 201.

Saturday’s event, Remembering Fukushima and Beyond: Challenges and Resilience after Japan’s Earthquake, will take place on March 9, beginning at 2:45 p.m. in the Neilson Browsing Room.  The day begins with a panel discussion followed by a reception and then interview with Yuka Kanno, producer of the documentary Resilience.

Early next week, on Monday, March 11, there will be a screening and disucssion of Buddhism After the Tsunami, presented by the Smith College Department of Religion. Perspectives on Buddhism in the midst of Japan’s recovery from the March 11, 2011, earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters are presented in the documentary, together with an exploration of the role of Buddhism in the care of the 3/11 bereaved and dead.

The film screening will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Seelye 201. A discussion will follow the screening.

The events are free and open to the public.
